The Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has accused an X user of using artificial intelligence (AI) to create a fake video allegedly exaggerating the extent of flooding in Lagos.
The controversy began after a video went viral on X, with the user claiming it showed severe flooding in a part of Lagos. In response to the post, Wahab rejected the claim, insisting that the footage was AI-generated and did not accurately represent the situation in the state.
The Commissioner condemned the circulation of manipulated content, warning that it could mislead residents and interfere with the governmentâs efforts to monitor flooding incidents and coordinate emergency responses.
âUsing AI-generated videos to promote a particular agenda is neither responsible nor in the public interest. We rely on information shared across various platforms to monitor developments and coordinate appropriate responses statewide. Deliberately circulating manipulated or AI-generated content undermines these efforts and is unfair to those genuinely affected by flooding.
âWe all have a responsibility to ensure that the information we share is accurate and does not mislead the public. I encourage everyone to refrain from creating or disseminating misleading content for attention or engagement. Let us act responsibly and in the best interest of our dear state.â
Wahab urged residents and social media users to verify information before sharing it, stressing that accurate reports are vital to effective disaster response and public safety during the rainy season.
