The United Nations Children’s Fund(UNICEF) has urged schools and educators to integrate play into teaching, saying it is essential for children’s cognitive development and improved learning outcomes.
UNICEF’s education programme officer, Kano Field Office, Mustafa Shehu, stated this yesterday during the commemoration of the 2026 International Day of Play at Kuka Bulukiya Primary School in Dala local government area of Kano State.
The event was organised by the Kano State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) in collaboration with UNICEF.
Shehu said the United Nations set aside June 11 annually as the International Day of Play to promote awareness of the importance of play in children’s growth and education.
According to him, play-based learning helps children grasp concepts faster, builds their confidence and creates a more inclusive learning environment.
“When play is integrated into learning, children learn faster and participate more actively. It supports their cognitive, emotional and physical development, which is why learning and play should go hand in hand,” he said.
He added that UNICEF was promoting child-centred and interactive teaching methods capable of making learning more engaging and effective for pupils.
The UNICEF official expressed optimism that the annual celebration would encourage teachers to create classroom environments that allow children to learn without barriers while nurturing their creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of Dala Local Government Area, Surajo Ibrahim Imam, commended UNICEF and SUBEB for championing innovative approaches to education.
He said combining classroom instruction with games and recreational activities enhances pupils’ understanding of lessons and improves their academic performance.
“Children learn better when lessons are delivered through engaging and enjoyable activities. Play strengthens comprehension, creativity and social interaction among pupils,” he said.
Earlier in his welcome address, representative of the Permanent secretary of the state ministry of Education Sagir Danbare, thanked the organisers for the support and reiterated government commitment to ensuring no child is left behind in acquiring education.
The event featured educational games, interactive learning sessions and performances by pupils aimed at demonstrating the role of play in enhancing learning. School bags, uniforms, writing materials and sporting equipment were also distributed to the pupils.
