Arsenal Begin Title Defence Against Coventry As Premier League Unveils 2026-27 Fixtures

Defending champions Arsenal will launch their 2026-27 Premier League campaign at home to newly promoted Coventry City, while Liverpool face a stern opening test away to Newcastle United following the release of the new season’s fixture list.

The Gunners, who ended a 22-year wait for the league title last season, will kick off the new campaign under the Friday night lights at the Emirates Stadium on 21 August. Mikel Arteta’s side secured the crown on the final day of the previous season and will now begin their bid for back-to-back titles against Frank Lampard’s Coventry, who are returning to the top flight for the first time since 2001.

Arsenal’s early schedule also includes a clash with Aston Villa in the second round of fixtures before a mouth-watering London derby against Chelsea. Unlike last season, when the north London club faced a daunting run of matches against Manchester United, Liverpool, Newcastle and Manchester City before the end of September, their first meeting with City this term will not come until late November.

The first North London derby will take place at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in early December, with the return fixture at the Emirates set for 1 May.

Liverpool Face Tough Start Under Iraola

One of the standout opening-weekend fixtures sees Liverpool travel to St James’ Park, where new manager Andoni Iraola will take charge of the Reds in a competitive match for the first time.

The Spaniard succeeds Arne Slot and faces an immediate examination against a Newcastle side expected to challenge near the top of the table. Iraola’s return to former club Bournemouth is scheduled for 19 September, while Liverpool will conclude their season at home to the Cherries.

Liverpool’s first Premier League meeting with Manchester United is set for mid-November, while the season’s first Merseyside derby against Everton will take place at Hill Dickinson Stadium later that month. The return fixture at Anfield is scheduled for 30 January.

Alonso’s Chelsea Era Begins at Fulham

New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso will start his Premier League tenure with a west London derby against Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Meanwhile, Manchester City begin a new chapter following Pep Guardiola’s departure, with Marco Rose’s Bournemouth providing the opposition at the Etihad Stadium in City’s opening league fixture.

Promoted Clubs Handed Mixed Fortunes

Hull City, fresh from their Championship play-off triumph, will mark their return to the Premier League by hosting Manchester United.

Ipswich Town’s first match back in the top flight will be at home to Sunderland, offering an intriguing early-season encounter between two promoted sides.

Tottenham Hotspur open their campaign away to Brentford, while Roberto De Zerbi’s side face a demanding run-in, with Arsenal, Chelsea, Coventry City, Manchester United and Aston Villa all awaiting in their final five league matches.
