First lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has warned that climate change is no longer a distant threat, as its effects are already impacting lives, livelihoods, food security and public health in Nigeria and across the world.
In a message to mark the 2026 World Environment Day yesterday, Mrs Tinubu joined millions of people globally in calling for urgent and collective action to protect the planet and guarantee a better future for coming generations.
The first lady noted that this year’s theme, “A Global Call for Climate Action,” underscored the need for individuals, communities and nations to work together to tackle environmental challenges.
According to her, rising temperatures, flooding, drought, desertification and environmental degradation continue to pose serious threats to societies around the world, including Nigeria.
“Climate change is no longer a distant threat. Rising temperatures, flooding, drought, desertification, and environmental degradation continue to affect lives, livelihoods, food security, and public health across the globe, including here in Nigeria,” she said.
Mrs Tinubu stressed that everyone has a responsibility to contribute towards restoring the environment, promoting sustainable practices, protecting natural resources and building climate-resilient societies.
“As individuals, communities and nations, we all have a role to play in restoring our environment, promoting sustainable practices, protecting our natural resources, and building climate-resilient societies,” she stated.
The first lady urged Nigerians and the international community to unite in confronting the challenge of climate change and work towards a safer and greener future.
“Let us rise together in this global call for climate action and work toward a safer, greener, and more sustainable future for all,” she added.
World Environment Day is marked annually on June 5 to raise awareness and encourage action aimed at protecting the environment and addressing pressing ecological challenges.
