Former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, has cautioned against propaganda and the spread of fake news, warning that false narratives, particularly on social media, could embolden criminal and terrorist groups and worsen Nigeria’s security challenges.
Abdulsalami made the appeal in a statement issued to mark his 84th birthday, where he reflected on the state of the nation and expressed appreciation to Nigerians for their support and goodwill over the years.
The elder statesman said recent security developments, including the death of General Rabe Abubakar and others, had prompted him to reflect deeply on the challenges confronting the country and the need for greater national unity.
Drawing from his years of military service, including participation in the Nigerian civil war and peacekeeping operations abroad, Abdulsalami said Nigeria, like many nations, was currently facing economic and security pressures that require collective commitment and action.
He stressed that maintaining order and overcoming insecurity should not be left to security agencies alone but must involve every citizen.
According to him, while the armed forces and other security institutions have remained committed to confronting terrorism and other security threats, Nigerians also have a responsibility to support efforts aimed at restoring peace and national cohesion.
Abdulsalami expressed concern that the politicisation of security matters has contributed to worsening conditions across the country.
He warned that propaganda and misleading narratives could strengthen criminal elements and undermine national efforts to address insecurity.
“The success of one terrorist group encourages another and unless we have a rethink, we will continue to promote this crisis,” he said.
The former Head of State urged citizens to support government and security agencies at all levels in confronting violent groups irrespective of ethnic, religious or political differences.
He also called on security agencies to remain resolute and encouraged government authorities to sustain decisive actions towards ending the country’s security challenges.
Emphasising the need for unity, Abdulsalami said Nigeria remained the collective responsibility of all citizens.
“Nigeria is the only country we have. I joined the army to defend it with my life. I am a firm believer in a united and peaceful Nigeria. At my age, it was and is still my dream that we hand over to our children a united and prosperous nation,” he stated.
He appealed to Nigerians to remain calm and law-abiding, noting that overcoming insecurity would require collective vigilance.
“I appeal to all our citizens to remain calm and law abiding. The task ahead requires our collective vigilance. I pray for comfort to the families of our fallen heroes,” he added.
