Benfica are edging closer to securing Marco Silva as their next manager, with talks between the Portuguese coach and the Lisbon giants advancing rapidly in recent days.

Silva’s current deal with Fulham expires this month, and while the Premier League club have proposed a renewal, the 48-year-old has yet to commit his future to Craven Cottage.

The development comes after José Mourinho’s abrupt departure from Benfica.

The 63-year-old, who returned to the club for a second stint in September, has since signed a three-year contract to take over at Real Madrid. Mourinho guided Benfica to a third-place finish in the Primeira Liga.

Silva, who joined Fulham from Everton in July 2021, steered the Cottagers back to the Premier League at the first time of asking following their relegation to the Championship.

Last season, his side finished 11th in the top flight, level on 52 points with Chelsea.

With his future unresolved and Benfica pushing for an agreement, an official announcement could be imminent.
