Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has taken sweeping action following Bayelsa United’s relegation from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), dissolving the club’s board and management while also terminating the contracts of all players.
The drastic decision comes after the Yenagoa-based club suffered relegation despite receiving substantial financial support from the state government throughout the season.
Government officials said the move was aimed at ensuring accountability and addressing the factors that contributed to the club’s disappointing campaign.
The governor directed that the dissolution take immediate effect as preparations begin for a comprehensive restructuring of the club ahead of its participation in the Nigeria National League (NNL) next season.
A new management team is expected to be appointed in the coming days, with the state government determined to rebuild the club and secure an immediate return to the top flight.
Bayelsa United endured a difficult season and ultimately failed to avoid the drop, joining El-Kanemi Warriors, Wikki Tourists and Remo Stars among the teams relegated from the NPFL.
The club’s relegation has sparked widespread disappointment among supporters, many of whom had expected a stronger campaign given the level of investment made by the government.
The impending overhaul is expected to usher in significant changes to the club’s structure, recruitment policy and long-term strategy as Bayelsa United seek to bounce back from one of the most disappointing seasons in their recent history.
