Comedian and writer Gina Yashere has revealed that she pushed back against Hollywood executives who wanted the lead Nigerian character in the hit sitcom Bob Hearts Abishola to be light-skinned.
Speaking on the One54 Africa Podcast, Yashere said she insisted that Abishola be portrayed by a dark-skinned Nigerian woman to ensure authentic representation.
“I was like, ‘Nope!’ I fought them. I was like, she has to be a dark-skinned Nigerian woman or this show ain’t going to work,” she said.
Yashere, who co-created the CBS series alongside American television producer Chuck Lorre, explained that authentic African representation was non-negotiable, especially for a show centred on a Nigerian immigrant’s life in America.
The role eventually went to Nigerian-born actress Folake Olowofoyeku, whose portrayal of Abishola earned widespread praise for bringing depth, humour and authenticity to the character.
Yashere’s revelation has sparked fresh conversations online about colourism in Hollywood and the importance of ensuring African stories are told by actors who genuinely reflect the communities they represent.
Many social media users have applauded the comedian for standing her ground, describing her decision as a significant win for authentic Nigerian representation on the global screen.
