Even when he had nothing, his heart was with the poor. Their pain and burden attracted his attention, and he began searching for a way to bail them out.
Among others, his endeavours led to the birth of Continental Computers, which Alhaji Salisu Mamman runs as founder and chief executive officer.
After 30 years of running the enterprise, Mamman asserts that one of the company’s most significant achievements is not the buildings it has constructed or the businesses it has established, but the lives it has transformed.
In an interview with LEADERSHIP in Katsina, Mamman said Continental Computers has trained and empowered more than 200 young men and women since its inception, many of whom have gone on to build successful careers across various sectors of the Nigerian economy.
“Over the past 30 years, I can confidently say that we have trained more than 200 young men and women,” he said. “Many of them joined us straight from secondary school with little or no experience. We trained them and provided opportunities for them to grow.”
According to him, the company deliberately created a work environment that encourages education and personal development. Through a flexible shift system, employees can combine work with academic pursuits, enabling them to earn diplomas, degrees and postgraduate qualifications while earning a living.
“We operate morning and evening shifts, allowing our staff members to attend classes and continue their education without affecting their work responsibilities,” he explained.
Mamman noted that many former Continental Computers employees today make significant contributions in banking, academia, telecommunications, government agencies, and private enterprise.
“Some are working in banks, some are lecturers in higher institutions, some are with organisations such as the Central Bank, MTN, and Globacom, while others have established their own businesses,” he said.
The business leader described the company as a “nurturing ground for talent,” stressing that investing in young people has always been a key component of its corporate philosophy.
Beyond youth development, Mamman reflected on the company’s evolution from a modest enterprise into a diversified conglomerate with interests spanning information and communication technology, renewable energy, hospitality, recreation, and event management.
Originally established as Continental Contractors, the company was rebranded as Continental Computers in 1996 and subsequently expanded into telecommunications and other sectors.
Today, the company operates several landmark projects, including the Continental Events and Sporting Arena, a virtual reality park, and the soon-to-be-opened Katsina Continental Hotel.
Despite its growth, Mamman said the company’s mission remains rooted in service to society and creating opportunities for others.
“We are not building a business for short-term profit. We are building an institution that will stand the test of time,” he said.
Offering advice to aspiring entrepreneurs, he urged young people to embrace patience, hard work, and resilience.
“Life is a marathon, not a sprint. If you want to succeed, you must be prepared for a long journey. Stay committed, remain focused and never give up,” he added.
