‘I don’t support any politician’ — Skales insists amid backlash

By Enitan Abdultawab

Nigerian singer Skales has clarified his stance on politics after facing criticism online over his recent comments about the country’s political landscape.

In a post shared on X, the singer insisted that he is not affiliated with any political party and does not support any of the major political figures currently in contention for leadership.

“I have seen all the posts targeted at me and I repeat again I do not rep any political party. I live in Nigeria and I am affected by the misleadership just like everyone else!” he wrote.

Skales stressed that his criticism of governance should not be interpreted as support for any opposition figure or political movement, maintaining that Nigerians deserve better than the options currently on offer.

“I am not in support of the present leadership nor the candidates for election and I will not settle for lesser evil … no matter how you want to spin it in your heads this is my truth at the end of the day. I don’t support any of them. We deserve better,” he added.

The statement comes days after the singer dismissed claims that he had been paid to promote a political agenda. In an earlier post, Skales said he deliberately keeps his distance from politics because he has lost faith in the country’s major political parties.

“Nobody paid me. As a matter of fact, I’m staying as far away as I can from politics but I am a Nigerian citizen,” he wrote at the time.

He added, “I do not support none of these political parties because they have all failed Nigeria. We need something fresh.”

Since Skales made his tweet, some supporters are applauding his refusal to align with any political camp while others are arguing that remaining neutral in the face of national challenges is itself a political position.
