… Akpe Recounts Journey From Humble Beginnings

Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has revealed that he faced what he described as “spiritual pressure” before selecting Dr. Peter Akpe as his new deputy governor following the death of Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo on December 11, 2025.
Akpe was later sworn in on February 25, after what the governor said was a process guided by divine direction and prayer support from clerics.
Speaking on Sunday during a special thanksgiving service held in honour of Akpe at the RCCG regional headquarters along Sani Abacha Expressway in Yenagoa, Diri said his decision was not taken lightly.
“I faced spiritual pressure picking a new deputy governor after the passing of Senator Lawrence Ewhurudjkpo. While the pressure was on me, I looked out for God’s direction amid the prayers of men of God,” he said.
The governor explained that after working closely with the late deputy governor for nearly six years, he needed someone he considered a “perfect match” to continue in the role.
He added that competence, rather than speculation about personal connections, guided his choice.
“I did not pay attention to rumours and speculation because Dr. Akpe has the competence to deliver on the job. I never knew he was my relative until recently I found out he hailed from my maternal home,” he said.
Diri also described the prevailing peace and security in Bayelsa as “priceless,” urging residents and the church to continue praying for leaders.
“No matter how bad a government may be, people should never fail to pray for their leaders,” he said.
In his remarks, Dr. Peter Akpe shared an emotional account of his journey from poverty to public office, describing his life experience as one shaped by hardship and faith.
He recalled growing up in difficult conditions, including struggles to pay school fees and living in a zinc house at the waterfront.
“There was a time they brought my father to the centre of the community to tie him over unpaid debts until there was intervention,” he said.
Akpe said his family’s situation began to change after a spiritual transformation, adding that his current position was evidence of divine grace.
“When we met the Lord some years ago, God started helping us. It was not so smooth as you see it now,” he said.
He thanked the church for the honour and support, describing the event as unexpected and deeply appreciated.
The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including the governor’s wife, Dr. Gloria Diri, lawmakers, members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, judicial officials, Christian leaders, and traditional rulers.
