Few Nigerian entrepreneurs have exemplified the virtues of resilience, vision, and indigenous industrialisation as profoundly as Chief Innocent Ifediaso Chukwuma, CON.
Rising from modest beginnings in Nnewi, Anambra State, Chukwuma has authored one of Africa’s most inspiring business success stories. Through determination, innovation, and an unwavering belief in local capacity, he transformed himself from a motorcycle spare-parts trader into the founder of Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing (IVM), Nigeria’s first indigenous automobile manufacturing company.
His journey is not only a testament to entrepreneurial excellence but also a powerful symbol of Nigeria’s potential to build globally competitive industries driven by homegrown talent and enterprise.
Born on October 1, 1961, in Uru-Umdim, Nnewi, Chief Chukwuma was the youngest of six children in the family of Chukwuma Mojekwu, a civil servant, and Martina Chukwuma, a homemaker. Like many young Nigerians of his generation, he dreamt of becoming an engineer. However, fate charted a different course when he was unable to secure admission to study engineering after completing his secondary education in 1978.
Rather than surrender to disappointment, he embraced entrepreneurship. Joining his elder brother’s pharmaceutical business, he soon discovered an innate talent for commerce. Determined to learn the ropes, he underwent an apprenticeship under the renowned motorcycle spare-parts dealer Chief Romanus Eze Onwuka. The experience laid the foundation for what would become a business empire.
In 1981, Chukwuma ventured into the motorcycle spare-parts trade, a booming sector in southeastern Nigeria. Armed with determination, business acumen and an eye for opportunity, he expanded rapidly. His breakthrough came when he began importing motorcycle components in semi-knocked-down form and assembling them locally, a strategy that reduced costs, increased competitiveness and introduced him to the possibilities of manufacturing.
What began as a trading enterprise evolved into the Innoson Group, a diversified industrial conglomerate with interests spanning plastics, tyres, motorcycles, industrial components and automobile manufacturing. Yet it was his bold entry into vehicle production that would cement his legacy.
In 2007, Chief Chukwuma founded Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing (IVM) in Nnewi. Three years later, on October 15, 2010, the company was formally inaugurated by then-President Goodluck Jonathan. The historic milestone marked the birth of Nigeria’s first indigenous automobile brand and signalled a new chapter in the nation’s industrial development.
Today, Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing produces buses, trucks, utility vehicles, passenger cars and specialised automobiles used by government institutions, security agencies and private organisations across the country. The company has become a symbol of local content development and a powerful demonstration that Nigeria can manufacture world-class products.
Beyond building vehicles, Chukwuma has championed industrial self-reliance. He has consistently argued that automobile manufacturing serves as an “industry of industries,” capable of stimulating growth across steel, plastics, rubber, electronics and engineering sectors. Under his leadership, Innoson has continued to expand production capacity, including investments in compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered vehicles, aligning with Nigeria’s evolving energy transition agenda.
His vision extends beyond personal success. Speaking recently on Nigeria’s industrial future, Chukwuma declared that the country is poised to become Africa’s automotive manufacturing hub if supportive policies for local production are sustained. He has welcomed increasing interest from international investors and remains committed to creating opportunities for more indigenous manufacturers to thrive.
“We are not only doing this for personal gains,” he once remarked. “We are doing it to support our nation, so that our nation will be great.”
A respected member of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) and a former Chancellor of Imo State University, Owerri, Chukwuma has received numerous honours for his contributions to business and national development. His recognitions include the Order of the Niger (OON), Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR), and, in 2022, the prestigious Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) conferred by former President Muhammadu Buhari. He has also received honorary doctorate degrees and multiple entrepreneurship awards from leading institutions and organisations.
