Alhaji Salihu Maikasuwa-Dangoje, representing Sakaba Constituency, has been elected Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly.
He emerged Speaker on Wednesday during plenary at the Assembly Complex in Birnin Kebbi following a unanimous vote by lawmakers.
The Clerk of the House, Alhaji Sulaiman Shamaki, who presided over the sitting, said the election became necessary following the vacancy created by the death of former Speaker, Alhaji Mohammed Usman-Zuru.
Shamaki explained that the process was conducted in line with Section 92(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers the House to elect a Speaker from among its members.
The nomination was moved by Alhaji Adamu Birnin-Yauri (APC–Ngaski) and seconded by Alhaji Lawal Haruna (APC–Fakai), after which Dangoje was unanimously elected.
In his acceptance speech, the new Speaker thanked his colleagues for the confidence reposed in him and pledged inclusive, transparent and purposeful leadership.
He also promised to strengthen unity within the House, enhance legislative efficiency, and prioritise people-oriented laws to support good governance and development in the state.
The election followed the death of Usman-Zuru, who passed away on April 7 in Cairo, Egypt, while receiving medical treatment.
The House is expected to continue legislative business as the state moves to stabilise its leadership structure following the vacancy.
