A Nigerian entrepreneur has triggered reactions online after criticising landlords over sharp rent increases in Lagos. She said rent on a property in Banana Island reportedly rose by 392.31%.
Nigerian actress and businesswoman, Lilian Esoro, also reacted to the situation. She said her business recently received another rent increase notice. This pushed the annual rent to ₦50 million.
In a post shared on her Instagram story, she said the situation is becoming difficult for many residents and business owners. She added that rents are often increased without any improvements to the properties.
“Same house you already own, with no renovations done, and you increase the rent just because you can. On what ground?” she questioned.
She said repeated rent increases are putting pressure on businesses. Many are forced to move, shut down, or cut staff. This, she added, leaves people struggling to cope.
She described the trend as lacking empathy. She urged landlords to think about how their decisions affect tenants and business owners.
She said:
“Some landlords really need to do better. Show a little empathy and kindness.”
