The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has unveiled a 12-man D’Tigers squad for the third window of the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers, with newly appointed head coach David Fizdale set to take charge of his first competitive matches.
Nigeria will compete in the crucial qualification window in Luanda, Angola, from 2–5 July 2026, as they continue their quest to secure a place at the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
Former NBA head coach Fizdale, who previously managed the Memphis Grizzlies and New York Knicks, will make his competitive debut on the African stage following his appointment. He has selected a balanced squad featuring experienced internationals alongside emerging talents, with the aim of strengthening Nigeria’s qualification campaign.
The 12-man squad comprises Uchenna Ireogbu, Ikenna Ireogbu, Caleb Agada, Martins Igbanu, Paul Dibal, Stanley Okoye, Daniel Utomi, Chimezie Metu, Wesley Iwundu, Christian Mekowulu, Kaodirichi Akobundu-Ehiogu and Michael Eric.
D’Tigers will face Guinea, Rwanda and Tunisia in Group C, with every fixture expected to play a pivotal role as the race for qualification reaches a decisive stage.
NBBF President Ahmadu Musa Kida expressed confidence in Fizdale and the selected players, describing the appointment as an important step in the continued development of Nigerian basketball.
“This is an exciting moment for Nigerian basketball. David Fizdale brings exceptional experience, leadership and a deep understanding of the modern game,” Kida said.
“We believe he is the right person to guide D’Tigers into the next chapter as we continue building a programme capable of competing with the very best in Africa and on the world stage.”
Kida also congratulated the players on their selection, urging them to embrace the responsibility of representing the country.
“We are confident they will compete with passion, pride and professionalism.”
With Fizdale beginning a new era on the sidelines and a squad blending experience with youthful promise, D’Tigers will be aiming to make a strong statement in Luanda as they seek to move closer to qualification for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
