The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has praised Funke Akindele for promoting respect for the naira in her film Behind The Scenes.
Released in December 2025, the film explored the pressures of financial and emotional responsibilities. It also delivered a clear message against the abuse of Nigeria’s currency.
In one scene, officials interrupt a party as guests prepare to spray cash. The moment highlights that spraying Naira notes is a punishable offence under Nigerian law.
The scene mirrors recent enforcement actions by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against public figures accused of mishandling banknotes.
In a statement issued on June 4, 2026, and signed by Director-General Lanre Issa-Onilu, the NOA described Akindele’s approach as a positive effort to encourage better public attitudes towards the naira.
“The NOA commends you for your recently released movie Behind the Scenes, particularly for the thoughtful and patriotic inclusion of a message promoting respect for the national currency. We wish to acknowledge you as a role model and applaud your deliberate effort to highlight the importance of preserving the dignity of our national currency by discouraging the practice of spraying and trampling on the naira at public functions.”
According to the statement, the NOA expressed its appreciation for the actress and pledged its continued support for her efforts to promote national development.
“As you are aware, the naira is not merely a medium of exchange but a symbol of our national sovereignty and collective identity. Your influence as a leading figure in Nigeria’s creative industry has significantly amplified this message, contributing to public awareness and behavioural change in an engaging and impactful way.”
The NOA said the entertainment industry plays a key role in shaping public values and behaviour. It added that Funke Akindele’s work demonstrates how film can promote positive social change and national values.
