The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested two suspected fraudsters accused of selling dummy phones to unsuspecting customers through a network of agents operating across the state.
The Command’s spokesperson, SP Suleiman Nguroje, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday, identifying the suspects as Audu Abubakar and Nasiru Hassan, both residents of Bauchi Street in Yola North Local Government Area.
According to the police, the arrests followed complaints from victims who discovered that the phones they had purchased were non-functional replicas disguised as genuine devices.
“Operatives of the Adamawa State Police Command have arrested two suspects for allegedly defrauding unsuspecting customers by selling them dummy phones instead of original working devices,” the statement read.
Nguroje said several dummy phones and other exhibits were recovered from the suspects during the operation.
He added that the Commissioner of Police, Kabiru Hassan, had directed investigators to carry out a comprehensive investigation and ensure the suspects are prosecuted upon its conclusion.
The Command also advised members of the public to remain cautious when purchasing mobile phones, urging buyers to patronise only accredited dealers.
“Customers are advised to test devices thoroughly and demand receipts before making payment,” the statement added.
