Residents of the newly recovered slum, Okpoko area of Ogbaru LGA, Anambra state woke up in the early hours of Sunday to behold a horrific scene following the discovery of lifeless infant twins in a drainage channel in the area.
Already suspected biological parents of the twins have been arrested by the operatives of the state police command attached to the Okpoko Police Station.
LEADERSHIP gathered that the arrest of the suspected parents of the abandoned twin infants followed an intelligence report given to the operatives of the Okpoko Police Station by some concerned residents of the area.
The spokesperson for the state police command (PPRO), Superintendent of police, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, who confirmed the arrest of the suspected parents of the abandoned infant twins in a statement on Sunday, said that following the report of the abandoned infant twins in a drainage channel somewhere along Co-operative Street, Nwokedi area of Okpoko, the operatives of the state police command attached to the Okpoko Police station immediately stormed the scene.
He said that the police team conducted an investigation that led to the arrest of a husband and wife believed to be the biological parents of the abandoned infant twins.
He said that the state Commissioner of police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, had expressed anguish over the development and vowed that the full weight of the law would be brought against whoever was discovered to be responsible for the sad fate of the twins.
He said that CP Orutugu strongly condemned the act, noting that every child deserves protection, care, and the opportunity to live.
