The House of Representatives on Wednesday called on the Federal Government and security agencies to urgently intervene in the renewed communal violence between the Karinjo and Wurkun communities in Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State, which has left at least five people dead and displaced hundreds of residents.
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Rep. Mohammed Audu, who raised concerns over the deteriorating security and humanitarian situation in the area.
Moving the motion during plenary, Audu said the latest outbreak of violence occurred on May 29, 2026, resulting in the death of no fewer than five persons, injuries to several others, and widespread destruction of homes, farmlands, crops and livestock worth millions of naira.
He warned that the renewed clashes have further destabilised Karim Lamido, an area already affected by broader insecurity linked to banditry across Taraba’s borders with Plateau, Bauchi and Gombe States.
According to him, more than 100 residents have been displaced and are currently facing severe humanitarian hardship.
“Over 100 persons in various communities in Karim have been displaced and rendered homeless… exposing them to further attacks while denying them access to potable water and other basic necessities,” he said.
Audu lamented that the affected communities, which are largely agrarian, have suffered significant economic losses due to the destruction of farms, crops and livestock.
“The victims are suffering untold hardship as their sources of livelihood have been destroyed,” he added.
Lawmakers expressed concern that recurring communal conflicts in Taraba State continue to undermine peace, security and economic activity, particularly in already vulnerable rural communities.
They warned that the humanitarian situation could worsen if urgent intervention is not provided, as displaced families struggle with access to shelter, food, clean water and healthcare.
The House therefore urged security agencies to intensify efforts to restore peace and prevent further escalation of the conflict.
It also called on the Federal Government, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other humanitarian bodies to provide immediate relief materials to affected communities.
Lawmakers further stressed the need for a lasting resolution through dialogue, stronger security presence and sustained peace-building efforts to address the root causes of the recurring violence.
