The Metropolitan Police have confirmed the arrest of three people in connection with the fatal stabbing of British-Nigerian singer and songwriter Talay Riley, whose death has shocked the music industry and sparked a murder investigation in London.
Riley, whose real name was Mark Orabiyi, was found with stab wounds on Friday, June 5, after police responded to reports of an incident in Silvertown, East London.
According to the Metropolitan Police, officers arrived alongside the London Ambulance Service and discovered the 35-year-old musician critically injured in the garden of a property on Rayleigh Road. Despite efforts by paramedics, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
In the latest update, police said three suspects were arrested on suspicion of murder shortly after the incident. A 27-year-old man has since been released on bail pending further enquiries, while a 24-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman were released with no further action following questioning. Investigators stressed that inquiries remain ongoing.
Police also revealed that a second victim, a man in his 20s, suffered multiple stab wounds during the incident and was taken to hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
Detective Chief Inspector Joanna Yorke, who is leading the investigation, described the killing as tragic and appealed for information from members of the public.
“This is a tragic incident, and my thoughts remain with Mark’s family and loved ones. Our investigation continues at pace. I would like to appeal for anyone who was in the area at the time of this incident to speak to the police,” Yorke said.
She added that detectives are particularly interested in obtaining CCTV, dashcam or other footage that could help establish the circumstances surrounding the attack.
In a tribute released through the police, Riley’s family described him as a beloved son, brother, uncle and friend whose life touched countless people.
“Mark was a beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend. He brought love, light, and joy to our family and to all who knew him. We will always cherish his kindness, beautiful spirit, and remarkable talent,” the family said.
Riley, who performed under the name Talay Riley, built a successful career as a singer and songwriter, working with international stars including Dua Lipa, Britney Spears, Ellie Goulding, Usher and Khalid. Tributes have continued to pour in from across the music industry, with artists including Stormzy and Craig David among those mourning his death.
Authorities say the murder investigation remains active as detectives work to establish exactly what led to the fatal stabbing.
