Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Akaninyene Udo for allegedly circulating false security information on social media that caused panic across parts of the state.
Udo, who reportedly operates under the name “AK Philo” on social media, was accused of posting a viral message warning the residents of a supposed impending bandit invasion, particularly in Eket and surrounding communities. The post, which included a threatening phrase and an image of an armed figure, triggered widespread fear and tension among the residents.
Police say the suspect, a native of Esit Eket local government area, deliberately shared the misleading content to create a false sense of insecurity at a time when public sensitivity to security issues remains high across the country.
Confirming the arrest in Uyo, the spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, said the command had been monitoring individuals using digital platforms to spread fear through unverified or fabricated security alerts.
She assured the residents that there is no credible threat to the state’s peace, stressing that Akwa Ibom remains calm, stable, and under effective security surveillance.
According to her, investigations into the incident have been concluded, and the suspect will be charged in court, while efforts are ongoing to identify others who may have participated in spreading the false information.
The police warned the public against circulating fake news or unverified security reports, noting that such actions constitute criminal offences and will be prosecuted.
Residents were advised to verify sensitive information through official channels before sharing it and to report genuine security concerns to the nearest police station or emergency lines.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and urged the public to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding.
