Wirtz Eyes Fresh Start At Liverpool After Difficult Debut Campaign

Liverpool midfielder Florian Wirtz says he feels more prepared and excited for his second Premier League campaign after admitting his debut season contained both highs and lows.

The 23-year-old joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen for a reported £116 million last summer but endured a challenging first campaign, scoring seven goals and providing 10 assists as both player and club struggled to find consistency under former manager Arne Slot.

With new head coach Andoni Iraola now in charge, Wirtz believes his first season in England has helped him adapt to the demands and intensity of the Premier League.

“I definitely learned a lot. I just learned how Premier League football is played and I think I am more ready for my second season because I know how it is now,” Wirtz told Liverpool’s official website.

“I’m really excited for my next season. I’ve played one year now in England and I’ve said often enough that it’s a different style of football than in Germany.

“You just get used to the games and your opponents. I just know how it is now, so I’m happy to have my next season.”

Reflecting on his first campaign, Wirtz admitted there were matches in which he was dissatisfied with his performances, although he also enjoyed a number of positive displays.

“It’s a difficult question, but of course there were some games when I wasn’t happy with myself, but also a lot of games when I felt good on the pitch,” he said.

“Last season was difficult for the whole club, but hopefully we have the right energy and mentality this season, so every player can shine more.”

Wirtz also revealed that he has discussed his preferred role with Iraola, making it clear that he is most comfortable operating as a No. 10 despite his ability to play in several positions.

“We spoke about this because I think it is important to know which position you are going to play and I know that I can probably play different positions, but No. 10 is my favourite and my best position, so let’s see how this works out,” he said.

The Germany international is also relishing the opportunity to work under Iraola, who he believes has demonstrated his ability to build competitive teams during his time at Bournemouth.

“I think especially in the last three years at Bournemouth you could see what he can do with a team. Of course, we are looking forward to working with him,” Wirtz said.

“For me, it is only two weeks that I have been in training, so I can just say that I’m enjoying it. I like the idea of football he has, so I’m really looking forward to it.”

With Liverpool targeting a stronger campaign, Wirtz said the squad must raise its intensity and improve its control of matches as they pursue success on multiple fronts.

“We want to win more games and to compete for all the titles we can play for,” he said.

“I think we have to get more intensity into our game and, at times, more control with the ball.”
