Spain’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal will look to outshine France captain Kylian Mbappé when the two European heavyweights meet in Tuesday’s FIFA World Cup semi-final, with a place in the final at stake.
Yamal, 19, is hoping to follow in Mbappé’s footsteps by winning the World Cup as a teenager, but must first overcome the French superstar, who has already cemented his place among football’s elite.
Mbappé announced himself on the biggest stage at the 2018 World Cup, becoming only the second teenager after Brazil legend Pelé to score in a World Cup final when he found the net against Croatia at the age of 19 years and 207 days.
The France captain has since built an extraordinary World Cup legacy, while this tournament marks Yamal’s first appearance on football’s biggest stage.
The Barcelona winger, however, already has happy memories against France. His stunning strike in Spain’s 2-1 victory over Les Bleus in the UEFA Euro 2024 semi-finals helped propel La Roja to the title, earning him the Young Player of the Tournament award.
Yamal has featured prominently in Spain’s World Cup campaign after recovering from a hamstring injury that threatened his participation.
He came off the bench in Spain’s opening goalless draw against Cape Verde before scoring in a 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia. Although he has started every match since, the teenager has yet to add to his tally.
Spain captain Rodri believes the youngster is putting too much pressure on himself.
“I think Lamine needs to calm the anxiety he sometimes has because he wants to show how important a player he is for us,” Rodri said.
France, meanwhile, have rediscovered their attacking fluency after a disappointing UEFA Euro 2024 campaign, with Mbappé leading the charge.
The 27-year-old has scored eight goals at the tournament, drawing level with Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot and moving to within one goal of matching the Argentine’s all-time World Cup scoring record of 21 goals.
Having lifted the trophy in 2018 and finished runner-up in 2022 after scoring a hat-trick in the final, Mbappé is chasing a third consecutive World Cup final appearance—a feat achieved only by Brazil great Cafu between 1994 and 2002.
The Real Madrid forward insists his focus remains solely on helping France reclaim the title.
“My only focus is on helping the team and getting us back here on July 19,” Mbappé said after France’s victory over Sweden in the Round of 32.
He reiterated that ambition following the quarter-final win over Morocco, saying: “I have won a World Cup and been a runner-up. This team has done neither of those things, but it is the team with the greatest potential.”
Tuesday’s semi-final also renews an increasingly fascinating rivalry between two of world football’s brightest stars.
Despite Mbappé’s greater experience and World Cup pedigree, Yamal has enjoyed the upper hand in recent meetings. Across club and international football, the Spanish winger has won eight of his 10 encounters with the French forward over the past two years.
With a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final on the line, all eyes will be on whether the teenage prodigy can once again get the better of the man many regard as the face of modern football.
