Nigeria has pledged to host a “memorable” Africa Schools Games in Abuja in 2027, with the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Shehu Dikko, assuring a visiting ANOCA Africa Schools Games Coordination Commission delegation of the nation’s commitment.
Mallam Dikko, speaking on Tuesday during the delegation’s visit, emphasised that hosting the Games aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s mandate to develop grassroots sports. “We are committed to hosting the best Games ever because it clearly aligns with the mandate by our dear President who has not hidden his desire to ensure the development of sports from the grassroots,” he stated.
The ANOCA delegation, led by Chairman João Da Costa Manuel, is in Nigeria from June 8-11 to hold strategic meetings with the Local Organising Committee and inspect proposed venues. Mallam Dikko highlighted Nigeria’s ongoing “massive infrastructure reset” and the President’s personal backing for the event, noting President Tinubu is a patron of ANOCA.
Hon. Bukola Olopade, Director-General of the NSC, reiterated the commission’s strong track record in hosting international events, promising a “landmark Games.” Mr. Manuel expressed gratitude to Nigeria for hosting, stating, “The success of the Schools Games is important to us because it will help us to discover the future greats of Africa.”
